"But aren't they totally opposite? Germans and Russians?"
We were at a local coffee shop (just like we always do) in District 3, TP.HCM, having a conversation after lunch. He is Vietnamese but speaks Russian and German. I asked him what other countries he likes, and replied that he likes the Dutch, Swedes, and Swiss. Then, I pointed out that the mentioned counries are all in the northern part of the continent.
I asked him what is so special about these countries, and he said, it is their
"simplicity".
(he is a graphic designer)
So, the question at the beginning was a response to him saying these countries being simple.
I said,
"Germans are not simple, though..."
Later on (so, the conversation went on, ignoring the comment about their designs nowhere near simplicity) he told me about how Vietnamese learned from Russians of "simplicity" and "durability" during their occupation.
That clicked for me for I had long been wondering why mechanical designs in Vietnam tend to be ridiculously
"simple"
(not sure about "durability" of Vietnamese products...)
I prefer simplicity over anything else.
Maybe, it is in my blood as a Japanese.
